Beginning as soon as this week, passengers who have achieved elite or \u201cmedallion\u201d status in Delta\u2019s SkyMiles frequent-flyer program will be eligible for the upgrade offers. But officials stress that the initial number of private jet flights will be small and focused mainly at Delta\u2019s East Coast hubs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is truly a groundbreaking new approach from both industry standpoints,\u201d said James Murray, vice president of operations at Delta Private Jets (DPJ). \u201cNobody else can do what we\u2019re talking about doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The upgrades could also help Delta quell one of the thorniest\u2014and costliest\u2014problems in private aviation, known as \u201cempty legs,\u201d or the need to reposition a jet without having a customer headed to that particular location. These inefficient flights\u00a0account for roughly a third of all private jet flights, despite years of effort by the industry to minimize them. The advent of greater tracking data and new software analytics tools is likely to help private jet operators reduce their empty legs even further, said Erik Snell, president of Delta Private Jets.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_636\" style=\"width: 634px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/flightlistpro.com\/private-jet-charter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Delta-Air-Lines-Private-Jets.png\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-636\" class=\"wp-image-636 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/flightlistpro.com\/private-jet-charter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Delta-Air-Lines-Private-Jets.png?resize=624%2C442\" alt=\"Delta Airlines Private Jets\" width=\"624\" height=\"442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/flightlistpro.com\/private-jet-charter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Delta-Air-Lines-Private-Jets.png?w=624&amp;ssl=1 624w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/flightlistpro.com\/private-jet-charter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Delta-Air-Lines-Private-Jets.png?resize=300%2C213&amp;ssl=1 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 624px) 100vw, 624px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-636\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Source: Delta Private Jets via Bloomberg<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Initially, only Delta\u2019s top customers\u2014those at the highest &#8220;Diamond Medallion\u201d level, which is met when people spend $15,000 at Delta and travel at least 125,000 miles or 140 flight segments\u00a0per year\u2014were going to be invited to purchase the upgrades. But the company has spent several months tweaking its model and decided to expand the pool of potential customers by opening it to people at the lowest elite tier, those who travel 25,000 miles or 30 segments annually, and who spend $3,000. Most of the upgrades will involve travel scheduled the next day, although Delta Private Jets said it would have some flights that offer travelers as much as 48 hours\u2019 notice.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/flightlistpro.com\/private-jet-charter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Delta-Private-Jets.jpg\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-638\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/flightlistpro.com\/private-jet-charter\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/Delta-Private-Jets.jpg?resize=255%2C52\" alt=\"Delta Private Jets\" width=\"255\" height=\"52\" \/><\/a>Earlier this year, Delta Private Jets filed for a patent on the scheme of how to transfer passengers from a commercial carrier to a private jet operator. DPJ, a wholly owned subsidiary that calls itself the fourth-largest U.S. operator of private jet flights, has received regulatory approval to fly Delta passengers on 160 domestic routes, although it plans to begin mainly with flights among Atlanta, New York, and Cincinnati\/Northern Kentucky International Airport, near the unit\u2019s Erlanger\u00a0(Ky.) headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>Over time, Delta Private Jets officials said the program might expand, potentially\u00a0deploying\u00a0part of the private jet fleet toward regular upgrades on certain\u00a0routes, complementing Delta\u2019s commercial service. And depending on passenger reception, Delta may begin marketing the option of a private jet upgrade as commonly as it touts airport lounges, first class, and other amenities for the\u00a0most lucrative travelers. Still, \u201cDelta operates a whole lot more flights than we have [private] airplanes,\u201d Murray said, which means an\u00a0upgrade to a private jet is\u00a0likely to remain a niche offering.<\/p>\n<p>Yet, the \u201cempty legs\u201d problem of a vacant cabin won\u2019t ever be eliminated.
